PART 107  TRAINING

Part 107 training is available with three choices for potential pilots.
  • Self-paced, all-online training with no live instructor interaction
  • On-line, scheduled live webinar with live instructor for interactive discussion and in-depth learning
  • In-person (your location or ours) with a live instructor.

Any of the above may be combined for individual requirements. It is very common for organizations to combine a live webinar over two days, and a live instructor on-location for a third day, combined with practical flight training on-location. Although our success is (currently 100% pass), new pilots that have experienced a hybrid program (online plus in-person training), express a solid confidence prior to taking the FAA Knowledge Test/Exam that has our attendees demonstrating an average of 88% score! PRACTICAL FLIGHT TRAINING

Practical flight training (accompanied by our Practical Flight Training book) allows pilots one-on-one, up to six-on-one instruction with practical (actual) flight. SMG provides the aircraft, or students may learn with their own. This course operates on a two to four day program, designed uniquely for you or a group of pilots. This is one of our most popular courses, as we provide standard pole-bucket training, coupled with Risk Mitigation and Industry Best-Practices in this course. We have trained hundreds of students across the globe with this training program.

Beginning at 8 a.m. on a Monday, by mid-day Wednesday of the same week, students will feel confident and proficient in most basic UA operations, ideal to step into Automated Flight for accident scene reconstruction, construction site capture, inspections, and other automated processes. Many organizations will train for basic flight over three days, adding post processing such as Pix4D as a Day Four and Five training, allowing pilots to be capable of manual flight, automated capture, and post-processing, all within a five-day time frame. Practical training is often combined with a Part 107 Course for a robust, five day “Zero to Hero” training program that ensures organizational safety, best practices, and pilot competency.

ADVANCED PRACTICAL TRAINING

Advanced practical training also puts the UA/drone in the pilot’s hands, while learning advanced, precision techniques used for inspection, cinema, and artistical photography. Pilots will learn how to manage wind currents against buildings/obstacles, how to manage them, and how to identify them prior to flying in these environments.

Each class comes with a book on flight applications and common flight techniques.
This course is particularly applicable to Real Estate pilots, land developers looking for the best presentation images in their pitch deck, inspectors flying high and tight on obstacles in moderate/high winds, or those flying near volatile surfaces such as urban buildings, powerlines, dams, etc.

This program uses our proprietary post/bucket/lattice training system with timed responses, allowing certification of pilots once they're able to successfuly fly within the parameters of the course challenge, demonstrating competence, confidence, and focus.
Other Advanced Training programs include Night Flight, with theoretical and practical training to prepare pilots to apply for a 107.29 (Daylight Waiver) with the FAA.

Risk mitigation (ISO Standards) is a component of this training course, informing pilots of best practices and aircraft management in challenging environments.

POST-FLIGHT SOFTWARE TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

Flying the UA is a small, although very important component of using UA in any organization whether commercial or enterprise. A wide variety of post production software tools are available to pilots and corporations and SMG teaches the vast majority of them.

A few of the tools/processes we teach:

Pix4D: (mapping, modeling, RTK, GPS, outputs for GeoTiff, Contours, DSM, DTM, etc are all components in this one, two, or three-day course. We also train accident scene reconstruction, forensic capture, capture/processing for construction sites, inspection, and other common applications for the UA). Online or on-location training available.

Video editing: (processing codecs, color correction, broadcast data management are all included in this one or two day training program. Online or on-location training available.

Photo Processing: (Managing photos, re-composition of images, best practices for photo journalism, storage, watermarking, and more are part of this half or full-day program) Online or on-location training available.

Data-Management: (Storing, archiving, accessing data standards is important, particularly in a corporate or enterprise environment. Standardized methods of file nomenclature, storage, backup, and in some instances, logged access to data files is very important, particularly when dealing with large amounts of large-format data such as those video and image files captured from UAS).

Stood up in 1994, the team of SMG instructors have been providing training and growing our knowledge base to be shared with our clients. In our ranks we have Emmy, Grammy, DuPont recipients,  nationally acclaimed Search and Rescue Instructors, Law Enforcement officers, Construction Supervisors, ground instructors, military UAS pilots, certified ISO auditors, all who are deeply experienced UAV pilots.  We sit on FAA panels, CompTIA panels, advisory councils, and community boards.

The diversity of our nation-wide team ensures training programs that are standardized for specific vertical applications, and we offer books, guides, videos, and best-in-class instructors for practical and theoretical workshops. If we do not have a standardized program to fit a specific need, we’ll create one.

We offer instructor/examiner services that follow national standards, where  instructors are trained to teach at a standard of excellence, ensuring all members of any organization are trained to, evaluated, and executing the best practices possible.

What Clients Say About SMG

Amazing team and top class support, as I’m a beginner, Douglas helped me above and beyond and was more than patient, his responses were quick and he has a genuine care for you to enjoy and move forward with drones and processing! Highly recommended!
Lance G., Above All Else Drones
Douglas, Jennifer, Joanne, and John are an incredible team. We brought them in for a five-day training with our team, including Risk Mitigation, 107, Basic Flight, and Advanced Flight training. Our Training Sargeant sat in on some of their classes, and afterwards commented it was the best CE training he’d ever seen from an outside team. He immediately approved funding for us to bring SMG back to the East Coast for Night Flight and Forensics training.
Christian P, South Carolina PD
Let me say something. You have an amazing team and amazing/awesome support. They helped me on a weekend. This is what I call an “extra mile” in customer relationship. So I gave 5 stars for the training and if I could, I’d give 10 stars for post-training support.
Reed B, DroneDelight
We first met SMG at NAB in 1998. Douglas was the instructor of a production class. We’ve hired them for various training programs over the years and our public services messaging has drastically improved due to their tutelage.
We attended our first UAS classes in 2012 with Douglas and his team, and we’ve since begun a great program that has now involved our Zoning department being trained by SMG. Our city is expanding use of drones thanks to SMG helping us become comfortable with the technology.
