Case Study of Law Enforcement Uses of Unmanned Aerial Systems

April 11, 2018, 1:15 PM – 2:15 PM

Location:Sands 302 Level 1

The Nevada Highway Patrol has been a pioneer in the use of UAV to investigate motor vehicle crashes. A case study will be presented showing the capabilities of UAV’s to speed up the on-scene investigation allowing roadways to be cleared faster. A comparison will be shown of the data obtained by the UAV and by a total station. Discover the different available mapping software currently available to process UAV captured data.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Interpret the data that a UAV can provide in an investigation.
2. Compare traditional crime scene documentation to UAV documentation.
3. Review the different software packages available to process and view UAV data in a usable format.

About

Sergeant Daniel Marek began exploring UAV’s to speed up the on scene investigation of fatal crashes. Sergeant Marek proposed and initiated a UAV program for Nevada Highway Patrol. As a result, the Nevada Highway Patrol is the first law enforcement agency in Nevada to obtain a FAA COA and to fly missions in controlled airspace. Sergeant Marek is now expanding the program to train other Law Enforcement personnel in the State of Nevada to be UAV pilots for their departments.
